With the incredible variety of art that will be studied, produced, and performed at LACHSA, the building will facilitate the art making process. The building utilizes a simple repetitive braced frame steel structure to maximize efficiency and flexibility. Very few of the interior walls will be load bearing, to allow future adjustment to the building usage. The interiors of the classroom and studios will have a utilitarian aesthetic appropriate for an artist loft. The top level of the building is entirely comprised of the black box theater, which is the single largest part of the program and its most public function. Dramatic lighting will augment the transformation of the box into the nighttime spectacle of a performance or gallery space. In addition, the design incorporates a large event board on the northern wall of the black box facing the public entry road. Like a billboard, this display may be changed periodically to showcase student work and reflect school events and productions.
