|
The University of California, Irvine's Biological Sciences Unit 3 project is a 145,000 sf building comprised of three stories above grade plus a basement. This design-build project is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2007, and is on track for LEED Certification. The first floor features a 400-seat lecture hall, offices for the School of Humanities, and mechanical equipment. The second and third floors are laboratories and offices for the research staff. The basement level has a vivarium and is dedicated to holding rooms for mice, procedure rooms, and cage sterilizing equipment. Within the building is one Biosafety Lab (BSL) 3 Suite for research on special agents with space for a second. The structure is constructed of concrete walls, floors and columns on the basement, first and second floors. The third floor columns and roof are steel. Due to the nature of the research within the facility, the building includes a complex security system. |
